Description
OpenRCT2 is an open-source remake of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2. In the game, you design and manage an amusement park, constructing attractions, shops, and other facilities while striving to make a profit and maintain a positive reputation. The goal is to keep guests happy while achieving financial success. OpenRCT2 supports both scenario-based and sandbox gameplay. In scenario mode, players must complete specific objectives within a time limit, while sandbox mode offers more creative freedom, allowing players to build without restrictions or financial constraints.
Originally created by Chris Sawyer in x86 assembly, RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 engine was based on Transport Tycoon, another classic game that also has an open-source project, OpenTTD. OpenRCT2 not only replicates the original RCT2 experience but also adds many enhancements and new features. These include better support for modern platforms, an updated user interface, improved guest and staff AI, expanded editing tools, increased game limits, and even cooperative multiplayer. Additionally, OpenRCT2 brings back certain mechanics from the original RollerCoaster Tycoon that were missing in RCT2, such as the mountain-building tool, the "have fun" objective, launched roller coasters (where trains don’t pass through the station), and extra toolbar buttons.
To play OpenRCT2, you need the original RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 (or RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic).
If you also own the original RollerCoaster Tycoon and its expansions, you can point OpenRCT2 to it to play the RCT1 scenarios as well.
