Unreal

Unreal is a 1998 FPS developed by Epic MegaGames and Digital Extremes, powered by the first version of the Unreal Engine.

The game follows Prisoner 849, who is aboard the Vortex Rikers prison ship. During transport to a moon-based prison, the ship is diverted to the uncharted planet Na Pali, where it crash-lands near a canyon. The planet is home to the Nali, a primitive race, who are oppressed by the Skaarj—a technologically advanced, reptilian species. The Skaarj have enslaved the Nali and use them to mine the planet’s valuable resource, Tarydium, a high-energy mineral.

Unreal builds upon the ideas pioneered by id Software in Quake. Like those games, it features fully three-dimensional environments viewed from a first-person perspective. The player must navigate these environments, overcoming obstacles and dangers to survive. Along the way, hostile creatures populate each level, and the player must engage in combat using weapons they find throughout the game to continue progressing and reach the level's exit.
