Unreal Tournament is a competitive FPS set in a future where organized combat has become a popular bloodsport. After the legalization of "consensual murder" in 2291, people began fighting to the death in controlled tournaments. The Liandri Mining Corporation capitalized on this by organizing the Unreal Tournament, a high-stakes competition where the galaxy’s best fighters battle for fame, fortune, and survival. Set in 2341, the game features various arenas where contestants compete in brutal, no-holds-barred matches, showcasing their skills in a variety of combat modes, including deathmatch and capture the flag.

Unreal Tournament is primarily a multiplayer game, though it can also be played solo against bots. The game offers a variety of competitive modes, each with unique objectives and strategies.

• In Assault, two teams compete, with one attacking and the other defending a base. The attackers must complete a series of objectives, such as deactivating a power generator or infiltrating specific areas. Once the attack team has completed its objectives, the roles are reversed. If the defending team can complete the same objectives faster, they win. If both teams complete the objectives in equal time, the match ends in a draw. Notably, this mode is absent from the Dreamcast version.
• Capture the Flag involves players trying to steal the opposing team’s flag and return it to their own base. Successful teams rely heavily on teamwork, balancing both offense and defense as they work to capture the flag and prevent the enemy from doing the same.
• Deathmatch is a classic mode where players fight against each other in free-for-all combat. The goal is simple: be the first to rack up the most kills and outlast all opponents.
• In Domination, two teams vie for control of multiple capture points scattered across the map. Players must occupy these points to earn points for their team, and the team with the most points at the end of the round wins. The control of each point remains until an enemy player takes over.
• Last Man Standing puts a twist on the classic Deathmatch format. Players start with all weapons fully loaded and a set number of lives. The objective is to outlast opponents, with each player losing a life each time they die. No power-ups are available, and once all lives are gone, the player is eliminated.
• In Team Deathmatch, multiple teams face off in a battle to score the most kills, working together to defeat the opposing teams.

Powered by the Unreal Engine, Unreal Tournament received widespread acclaim, often being hailed as one of the greatest video games of its time. Reviewers particularly praised its graphics, level design, and fast-paced gameplay.
